Kevin McCarthy is haunting Mike Johnson
  + stars: | 2024-04-20 | by ( Brent D. Griffiths | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +5 min
House Speaker Mike Johnson can blame his problems on his predecessor, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Anyone may have struggled to wrangle this slim Republican majority. He offered three seats on the powerful House Rules Committee to more conservative members. The Rules Committee keeps the House moving, but Johnson has been forced to maneuver around it in the face of likely opposition to major bills. AdvertisementFormer House Speaker Newt Gingrich summed up Johnson's reality rather grimly.

And it is in these districts, from the Central Valley to the outskirts of Los Angeles and down to Orange County, where the House majority will likely be won or lost in 2024. which found evidence Biden willfully retained classified materials but that the evidence did not rise to the level of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And he took on criticism directly over his inclusion of the state of Biden’s memory. On the Republican side, lawmakers pressed Hur on why he didn’t charge Biden despite the evidence of classified documents in Biden’s possession. “In short, to borrow a phrase from the last administration, the Hur report represents the complete and total exoneration of President Biden,” Nadler said. Exit polls are a valuable tool to help understand primary voters’ demographic profile and political views. The share of Republican primary voters and caucusgoers holding these views about Trump’s fitness for office and the 2020 election varies from state to state, even as the dominant sentiment remains largely the same. Exit poll data this year finds GOP primary voters divided in their desired approach to abortion policy in a post-Roe v. Wade era. Trump has also racked up support among those primary voters who are the most acutely unhappy with the way things are going in the US. Exit polls for the Iowa Republican caucuses and the New Hampshire, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and California Republican presidential primaries were conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the National Election Pool.

“We’re going to win this election because we have no choice,” Trump said at his Mar-a-Lago resort as he savored his sweetest election night since he beat Hillary Clinton in 2016. The time for that excuse is going to fast run out now that the shape of the 2024 general election is clear. “Until now, people didn’t think it was going to be Biden versus Trump, but here we are and we’re ready to go,” he said. One reason why Trump didn’t come across as a loser to his supporters was that he convinced grassroots GOP voters that he didn’t actually lose the 2020 election. Democratic control of the Senate and the tiny House GOP majority that fell short of red wave expectations were widely blamed on his botched strategizing.

Super Tuesday confirmed what Americans already knew: Barring a dramatic event, it's a two-person race now, with a November rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Here are some takeaways:Both Trump and Biden Lost Support to Protest Voters. In Minnesota, the "uncommitted" got 19% of the vote, attributed to unhappiness over Biden's policy toward the Gaza war. Trump, meanwhile, lost Vermont to the now-departed-from-the-race Nikki Haley and lost sizable chunks of the GOP primary electorate to the former South Carolina governor. Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff had two Democratic colleagues, Rep. Katie Porter and Rep. Barbara Lee, vying with him for the top two lines.

California Republican Primary Election Results

In the 2022 state primaries, first results were reported 11 minutes later, and the last update of the night was at 6:10 a.m. Eastern time with 48 percent of votes reported. All active registered voters were mailed a ballot, which must be postmarked by Election Day and received by March 12. California is one of five states on Tuesday holding primaries for the presidential race as well as its state primary. In state and congressional primaries, candidates from all parties are listed on one ballot, and the top two vote-getters advance to the general election. In the presidential primary, Republican voters were required to be registered with their party to vote for its nominee, but Democrats and unaffiliated voters could participate in the Democratic election.

In South Carolina, about 41% of GOP primary voters described themselves as identifying with MAGA, with about one-third of New Hampshire GOP primary voters saying the same. Roughly 6 in 10 North Carolina GOP primary voters baselessly deny that President Joe Biden’s 2020 election win was legitimate, as do close to half of Virginia voters. About three-quarters of North Carolina GOP primary voters and roughly 6 in 10 Virginia GOP primary voters say they’d be satisfied to see Trump win the nomination. Most North Carolina and Virginia voters decided early on whom to back for president, according to the early exit polls. In North Carolina, about half of GOP primary voters made up their minds before 2024, with about one-fifth deciding in the final week.

A number of congressional Republicans running in 2024 are swiftly distancing themselves from a controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling seen as infringing on IVF, the latest obstacle for GOP candidates in the post-Roe era. IVF allowed me, as it has so many others, to start my family,” California Republican Rep. Michelle Steel, who represents a district carried by Biden, said on X. On the campaign trail though, the National Republican Congressional Committee is trying to help candidates navigate what is emerging as a tricky political moment. The memo tells candidates to “express support for IVF” and “oppose restrictions” on the procedure. Even some conservatives are going out of their way to express support for IVF and distance themselves from the Alabama ruling.

It's unclear though how their tributes will translate into tangible action, especially on Congress' long-delayed push to send more aid for Ukraine's defense. House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement that international leaders "must be clear that Putin will be met with united opposition." While it's true that the foreign aid bill could garner 218 votes, getting the bill on the floor is another matter entirely. Ukraine aid still hasn't passed.

That’s because a state law requires Nevada to hold a primary election, but the Nevada GOP voted to hold their own caucuses, or party-run meetings open to Republicans only. Nevada voters have received mail ballots for the Feb. 6 primary that don’t list front-runner Donald Trump’s name. Three Nevada GOP leaders overseeing the caucuses have been indicted on felony charges that they were so-called fake electors who sent certificates to Congress falsely claiming Trump won Nevada in 2020. Still, Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald has forged ahead with the caucuses. Trump himself told the crowd at the January rally to ignore the primary and attend the caucuses instead, saying “Your primary vote doesn’t mean anything.”A Nevada GOP rule states that any candidate who participates in the state-run primary may not run in the caucuses.

The House Ethics Committee investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz has reached out to an ex-girlfriend who was a key witness in the federal investigation into the Florida lawmaker, according to a source familiar with the ethics probe. Gaetz said in a statement to CNN that the Ethics Committee investigation is “payback” for Gaetz’s efforts to oust Kevin McCarthy, the former speaker of the house, and that he sees “through this sham and the American people will too.” The Ethics Committee declined to comment. That federal probe concluded in 2023 with no charges brought against the congressman. She is not expected to voluntarily cooperate with the Ethics probe. "When we return next week, by necessity, the House Homeland Security Committee will move forward with Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas," Johnson wrote in a "Dear Colleague" letter. Jonathan Turley, a George Washington law professor and frequent voice for conservatives on impeachment, has argued that impeaching Mayorkas for these reasons would set a dangerous precedent. AdvertisementSome House Republicans have also voiced concern about impeaching Mayorkas, raising the prospect that the vote could be extremely close. Congress has only ever impeached one Cabinet Secretary: former Secretary of War William Belknap. Johnson can take solace in the fact that some centrist Republicans, including those that represent seats that President Joe Biden won, have expressed openness to impeaching Mayorkas.

The House Ethics Committee investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz has reached out to the woman whom the congressman allegedly had sexual relations with when she was a 17-year-old minor, according to a source familiar with the committee’s work. The federal probe, which also included allegations he had sex with a minor, concluded in 2023 with no charges brought against the congressman. The increased activity under Republican leadership is notable given the committee probe was started by House Democrats in 2021. But McCarthy has repeatedly denounced those accusations and has said Gaetz worked to oust the former speaker because of the ethics probe. The probe expanded over the years before the Justice Department officially decided last year not to charge the congressman.

House Republicans appear poised to ramp up their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, facing headwinds amid resistance to comply with the inquiry from the White House. Three House committees have been investigating whether the president benefited from any of his son Hunter Biden’s overseas business activities, as well as probing other allegations of wrongdoing. But White House counsel has questioned the committees’ legal standing and stymied their path forward as they’ve sought to subpoena the Biden family and others without a chamber-wide vote to formally open the inquiry. The letter notes that Republicans notably made the same argument when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unilaterally opened an impeachment inquiry against former President Donald Trump. Still, Johnson signaled that House Republicans will move forward with the inquiry, in one way or another.

Conservatives also say Johnson, who was a rank-and-file member up until this point, hasn’t broken their trust yet. “Kevin was in a very difficult situation when that happened,” Johnson told CNN. But it wasn’t enough to win them over; the House Freedom Caucus took an official position against the plan. “Speaker Johnson must reassert his authority in this fight,” Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry, a Pennsylvania Republican, said ahead of the vote. “I think if you’re going to oust a speaker of the House from your conference, the red line should remain the same for the next speaker,” Greene said.
